	It's a slide rule; they're a type of mechanical computer that was used before electronic calculators. It's also really friggin' big. (Reply to this) (Parent)

	A few years ago, UC Berkeley held an auction of various pieces of old lab equipment that they were no longer using; one of the items was a huge (5'?), sturdy bakelite(!) slide rule. I finally had to let it go when the bidding got over $500... :( (Reply to this) (Thread)

	you should take that slide rule around on road trips and take pictures of it, like those house gnomes that people steal. my friend and i were going to have our TI-89s gold plated and strung aroudn our neck like Flava Flav clocks, but I think that slide rule is definitely cooler.
